Thursday's Thoughts......O Captain, My Captain...Lifelong projects....ORGANIC...

Above are mom's leaves and latest applique project...can you smell the Mexico Ocean and Hibiscus wafting from the tips?

and soon ready for ROXY...yep we are going to quilt it together!

and last night  we had so much fun playing with ideas of placement and raiding the orange fabric stash for stems....a few more to applique she decided.....

Ode to "PIECE 'O CAKE"and mom's talent...

It may seem trite to pay tribute to Walt Whitman and his LEAVES OF GRASS....but there is a beautiful reason to include him with this lovely project of mom's....

Walt Whitman was criticized for his LEAVES OF GRASS for it being "an exaltation of physical body and sexual love and also because of its innovation in verse form...." - Wikipedia

"his use of FREE VERSE with a long natural "ORGANIC" structure.."- Wikipedia

He was the ORIGINAL WONKY LIBERATED, no ruler..POET

It is said he spent his life revising this collection..

and then I wonder.....is there a project in my life that is lifelong.....

It was so wonderful reading tributes of great women in our lives from last week's giveaway!...

When I say, "O captain, my captain....."

you say.......

I love the organic applique. My mom quilted and it made me miss her! Such fun to share a project! I think my quilting has been a life long project. Sometimes a love / hate relationship!

I love your mom's applique! I just started the same pattern a few months ago. I only have four leaves appliqued so far. She's inspiring me to get back to it.

I CELEBRATE myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

I loafe and invite my soul,
I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass.

My tongue, every atom of my blood, form'd from this soil, this air,
Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their
parents the same,
I, now thirty-seven years old in perfect health begin,
Hoping to cease not till death.

Beautiful pieceful leaves! Your lifelong project is giving, I think...love...joyful inspiration. I bet that's just how you've always been. This quote just came on the radio here, I think you'll appreciate it "You can get a living from what you earn, but you can only earn a life from what you give". Enjoy your birthday, Em...of course you will!

Hmm....you say "O Captain, my captain.." and I say, "huh?" :) So I looked up the poem and see it's a tribute to President Lincoln and expresses the sorrow felt at his untimely death. I think about your timing with President's Day...and the times we live in now with the scent of change in the air..and wonder hopefully and not afraid about what will come next.

Being a Southerner by birth and a Southern by choice, I still feel the sorrows. I hope that one day the world will be able to see that we are all one people and are all able to live together in peace and harmony. Just as our captain had hoped.
